The criminal justice system is a vicious cycle that results from structural and systematic policies. The United States imprisons about 25% of the world’s prison population. The prison pipeline and high recidivism rates makes it incredibly hard for incarcerated people to reintegrate back into society. As a collective of 9 artists, we collaborated with formerly incarcerated people to change the narrative of mass incarceration by empowering them to see themselves in a new light. By pairing each artist with a returning citizen, a collaborative storytelling platform was launched with 9 short documentaries about mass incarceration as part of a creative residency program at 72andSunny.
